Do New Pavers Need to Be Sealed?

Sealing new pavers can benefit homeowners in several ways. Of course, the most exciting advantage is that your pavers will continue to boast a fresh, sharp appearance for years to come.

Many homeowners wonder if their new pavers really need to be sealed.

The short answer is, yes, you do need to seal new pavers. Doing so will protect them from decaying more quickly than is typical and keep them looking new and clean for years to come.

However, there are some things homeowners should be aware of when it comes to paver sealing in Daytona. For example, it’s possible to over-seal your pavers or to apply sealant too often. Additionally, certain climates affect when you should apply your sealant.

What Happens to Unsealed Pavers?

Without the protective coating that a sealant provides, your new pavers and concrete are prone to absorbing water and moisture. Absorption happens because concrete and other materials are porous and capable of taking in a lot of water.

While this may not seem like a big deal, over time, water can destroy the quality of your pavers by diluting their color, staining their surface, or threatening their structural integrity.

Does Sealant Need to Be Reapplied?

After some time, the sealant on your pavers will fade. When this happens, homeowners need to reapply the sealant to maintain the protection that sealant offers.

How often should you reapply your paver sealant? Generally speaking, you should reseal your pavers every three to five years. Depending on the type of sealant you used, you should be able to tell when it’s time to reapply just by looking.

Homeowners using non-film-forming sealants will notice a degradation in color. If they used film-forming sealants, they will see the barrier between the paver and the sealant becoming a little worn down.

It’s important not to over-apply your sealant, as this will create a foggy, hazy look on your pavers. Keep track of when you apply paver sealant so you only do it again when the time is right.

Surprisingly, climate has a lot to do with pavers and sealant. Namely, it drastically affects how long you should wait before you apply your sealant.

Living in a sunny, warmer climate, you can apply your sealant within a few hours after you’ve installed your pavers. When paver sealing in Daytona, it’s best to seal as soon as possible before any rain gets trapped in your pavers.
